Casio F-91W: review

Okay guys, first post of my blog and my first watch review, therefore, as watch lover I must start with him. The quintessential digital watch, ladies and gentlemen, Sir Casio F-91W.

For the Casio F-91W (click here), I would like to share a little bit of history of this iconic watch that we all received, bought or given as gift when we were kids. This digital quartz watch was introduced in 1989 by Casio as a successor to the previous similar model F-87W. The new Casio F91W immediately established itself on international markets for its very affordable price, its design and some simple but very useful functions. Designed by Ryusuke Moriai as his first watch for Casio, the F-91W contributed to the global affirmation of the use of digital wristwatches around the world.

A very light watch, perfect with almost all the outfits of the time (80s), equipped with an alarm, stopwatch, time signal and water resistant, an exceptionally long battery life, very cheap, it was all a "Wolf of Wall Street" needed, but it was perfect for a worker just hired in a factory also, or for a father who wanted to present to his little child his first watch. And then, for the computer guy of the late eighties, the computer expert or engineer recently graduated and looking for his first job. Not without criticism, even deserved, the Casio F-91W is today one of the best-selling watches in the world.

The main criticisms also made by Casio lovers and collectors of this model are always the same. Even if made of resin, the band is very fragile in the sense that, especially when it is exposed to heat or cold, a little force when wearing it is enough to "tear" or "crack" the band. The alarm volume is so low that it is almost impossible to hear it, and, therefore, it should be considered more than an alarm clock, a simple acoustic warning. The green LED which lights up only half of the dial from left to right is so weak that you have to bring the watch close to your nose to be able to read the time in the dark. The water resistance (WR) or impermeability translates into a simple resistence to a few drops of rain or splashes of water. In short, if on one hand the Casio F91W is one of the most iconic and loved watches, on the other hand it still remains a sort of toy for children. Recently, the new generation of show pretty girls, the so-called influencers, have relaunched the F91W along with other equally cheap watches from the Casio Collection and Casio Vintage series.

Many Casio watches, in fact, even when are explicitly labeled for "men", are perfect unisex watches or are even more beautiful on women's wrists. The reason is very simple and is due to their shape which resembles a plasma flat screen, and their straps which size almost always 18 mm. Finally, the Casio F-91W is perhaps the most personalized watch among the watches out there. All the true enthusiasts of this Casio have indulged themselves with their customizations over the years. Some change the color of the light, enhancing the LED to illuminate the entire dial also, whilst I have tried, as you can see in the photo, two NATO straps and an original Casio steel strap. But I think that for my F-91W, I will buy an original Casio black steel band, thus making it a sort of little brother of the Casio A168 ;)!
